Overview
  • Amoxicillin and Penicillin are two types of antibiotics. Although, they have similar functions but the difference between amoxicillin vs penicillin is the efficacy.
Amoxicillin Effectivenes
  • Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that can use to treat bacterial infection in the body. It blocks the bacterial cells production.

  • Amoxicillin
  • What is amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic. It fights bacteria in your body.

Amoxicillin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as ear infections, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and E. coli or salmonella infection. Amoxicillin is also sometimes used together with another antibiotic called clarithromycin (Biaxin) to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. This combination is sometimes used with a stomach acid reducer called lansoprazole (Prevacid).

  • Uses
Treat infections of the ear, nose, and throat.
Treat Infections of the genitourinary tract.
Infections of the skin and skin structure
Infections of the lower respiratory tract
Gonorrhea, acute uncomplicated (ano-genital and urethral infections)
    Cure bladder infections
    Used to treat pneumonia
    Stomach ulcers
It can be used with another antibiotic called clarithromycin (Biaxin) to treat helicobacter pylori infection.
It is also used sometimes to prevent anthrax infection.

  • Amoxicillin antibiotics work by stopping the bacteria from making cells walls.

  • Working of Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin belongs to a group of drugs called the aminopenicillins that are a part of beta-lactam antibiotic. These antibiotics work by stopping the bacteria from making cells walls. This eventually leads to cell lysis and bacteria to die. If a person takes an overdose of amoxicillin, one may suffer from decreased production of urine, lowered kidney functions and kidney failure. Amoxicillin capsules, tablets and chewable tablets can be stored at room temperature. Keep the medication away from moisture and heat. Amoxicillin suspension and pediatric drops need to be refrigerated after mixing. One should discard the suspension within 14 days after begin mixed.

Amoxicillin is used in curing bacterial infections of the nose, ear, throat, skin and urinary tract. It is used in treating diseases caused by bacterial infections such as Bronchitis, Pneumonia and Gonorrhea. Amoxicillin is used in various forms like:

    Amoxicillin pediatric dose,
    Amoxicillin capsules,
    Non-chewable Amoxicillin tablets,
    Chewable Amoxicillin...
Penicillin Effectiveness
  • Penicillin and other beta-lactams that bind two proteins called Penicillin-binding proteins which are bacterial enzymes that catalyzed cell wall synthesis that lead to destruction of bacteria.

  • Penicllin mechanism of action
  • Penicillin is a bactericidal which is an antibiotic and kills the bacteria. It usually stops the formation of the bacterium’s cell contents.
  • Penicillin was one of the greatest unifying factor of the 1920's because of its historical significance in opening up the era of antibiotics, its contributions in helping fight bacterial diseases and infections in WWII (U.S.), and its continuous uses today as the "miracle drug".
  • Allergic reactions to penicillin are not uncommon. These constitute by far the most important type of untoward effects to penicillin and include contact dermatitis, urticaria, asthma, pruritus, local reaction at the site of injection, fever, erythema, polpyarthritis, and exfoliative dermatitis. Anaphylactic shock is rare, but it is increasing in frequency; death has followed in some instances. Patients known to have atopic allergy or a previous reaction to a drug need a skin or conjunctival test prior to the administration of penicillin. Furthermore, it is recommended that such patients remain close to medical facilities for at least 30 minutes after an injection.

  • Dosage of penicillin tablets or oral solution for most bacterial infections, including pneumococcal, staphylococcal, and fusospirochetosis, in adults and children 12 years and older are 250 to 500 mg every 6-8 hours. Dosing for streptococcal infections is 125 to 250 mg every 6-8 hours for 10 days.
Amoxicillin Vs Penicillin
  • Both drugs are used to treat infectious diseases. Amoxicillin is used more often because its effective and safe than Penicillin. Amoxicillin is semi-synthetic which makes it better able to destroy the cell walls of bacteria, compared to penicillin, which is synthetic. Amoxicillin can be taken for a shorter period of time unlike penicillin.
